Northern New Mexico has long been known as a hotbed for high school hoops, cross-country distance stars and the occasional boys or girls soccer team. The one thing it’s not held in high regard for is swimming and diving.

“He’s just a sophomore,” the coach said. “These games are there. It’s in him, he’s talented but to do it every night it just takes experience and he’s gaining that right now.”

With plenty of scenarios and drama left to play out in the final week of the season, the biggest plotline might might be the daily weather updates.

“It’s obviously frustrating,” Weir said. “I told the guys I know it’s frustrating. The losses are piling up and it’s hard, but we just have to keep working and trying and improve to eventually win a game like this.”

For one night, at least, all was right with the most disappointing team in the Mountain West. The Lobos got a career-high 20 points from point guard Keith McGee in a 92-60 blowout of hapless San Jose State.
