The mass exodus at The University of New Mexico now extends into players who have never even suited up for the Lobos.

Men’s basketball coach Paul Weir, who was hired one week ago Tuesday, announced that three members of former coach Craig Neal’s incoming recruiting class have asked for and been granted a release from their scholarship obligations. Recruits Chris Sodom, Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler and Mike Parks, Jr., can now pursue options with other schools.

“We wish all three of these young men the best in their future endeavors,” said Weir. “These situations are all about a perfect fit and I think we all agreed that this was no longer the case here. They remain exceptionally talented young men with incredibly bright futures ahead of them.”

That makes 10 players who were scheduled to be part of next season’s roster who will no longer be at UNM. It started with junior Elijah Brown, an all-conference guard who announced he would transfer as soon as he received his undergraduate degree by the end of the spring semester.

That was followed in short order by guards Sam Logwood, Jalen Harris, Anthony Mathis and Xavier Adams, as well as walk-ons Holt Shelley and Adam Cumber. It’s in addition to the loss of outgoing seniors Tim Williams and Obij Aget.

Weir said the official process of letting Chandler Parks and Sodom out of their commitments is still underway but should be completed by the end of the week.
