New Mexico had the lead it wanted.

It just couldn’t hold on to it.

The Mountain Division Pecos League All-Star Game was firmly in the hands of the New Mexico squad on Tuesday, but Santa Fe Fuego reliever Nick Hornbaker struggled in the eighth inning. That allowed the Mountaineers to escape with a 7-6 win in Garden City, Ka.

New Mexico led 6-0 after two innings, but failed to score after that. The Mountaineers cut the lead to 6-4 entering the eighth when Hornbaker took to the hill. He allowed a two-out RBI single to Kyle Rodriguez to cut the lead to 6-5, then Kenneth Fudge followed with a two-run single to give the Mountaineers a one-run lead.

A.J. Flores was the top Fuego hitter, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. Ed Brandsema gave up a run over two innings, while Dan Karasinski gave up three sixth-inning runs in his sole inning of work.

The Fuego are off Wednesday before resuming Pecos League play at home against Trinidad on Thursday at 6 p.m.
