University of New Mexico men’s basketball head coach Paul Weir has hired former Eastern Kentucky head coach Dan McHale as his new assistant. The announcement came Thursday afternoon, ending an extended national search to replace Chris Harriman.

Harriman left Weir’s staff in April to take a similar position at Cal.

James Barron and Will Webber tie a bow on the prep football season for Santa Fe teams after Capital and St. Michael's bowed out in the first round of the playoffs. They also try to make sense of a new, complicated format for this week's state volleyball tournament.

McHale was fired in 2018 after three straight losing seasons at EKU. His teams failed to qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference tournament all three years, although the Colonels did rank among the league’s leaders in scoring offense. He previously held assistant posts at Minnesota, Seton Hall and Iona. He was also a student manager during a national championship run at Kentucky between 1997-2001.

“His blend of acumen and enthusiasm will be a great injection into our program,” Weir said in a statement issued by UNM. “His experience as a Division I head coach, at the highest levels of college basketball, and in our style of play make him a perfect addition for us.”
