The Santa Fe Fuego secured their fourth straight win as Alex Merithew fired a complete game during an 11-5 victory over the White Sands Pupfish at Griggs Park. The Fuego are now just one game under .500 at 9-10 after struggling through the first two weeks of the Pecos League season.
White Sands was in control through the first four innings, scoring single runs in each frame to take a 4-0 lead. It all collapsed over the next two innings, as the Fuego posted seven runs to take a 7-4 advantage. Robert Garza hit a grand slam in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 4-all. In the sixth, Sherman Graves scored on a passed ball to break the tie, then Josh Youngchild’s two-run double gave Merithew a three-run cushion.
Merithew allowed 11 hit, but he only managed one walk and struck out eight. Merithew retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced.
Santa Fe has a chance to break even on the season when it entertains the Roswell Invaders on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Fort Marcy Ballpark.
