The streak is finally over for the Santa Fe Fuego, and God bless pitching.
Alex Merithew gave the Fuego seven strong innings and it was more than enough as Santa Fe won 10-3 over the Roswell Invaders in a Pecos League game Thursday night at Fort Marcy Ballpark. It was the fewest runs Fuego pitching allowed so far this season, and it halted their five-game losing streak.
Merithew allowed just seven hits and a pair of walks as the Fuego (4-9) built a 7-3 lead by the time he left the hill. Santa Fe scored three times in the second, thanks to Merithew’s two-run double. Merithew later scored when Graylin Derke was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 3-0 lead. Derke added a two-run home run during a four-run fourth as the lead mushroomed to 7-0.
Santa Fe had three homers, with Jackson Webb capping the scoring with a three-run blast in the eighth for a seven-run margin. Roswell fell to 8-6 on the year.
The two teams play the finale of a two-game set at 6 p.m. Friday before the White Sands Pupfish come to town for two games starting Saturday.
