It’s becoming a challenge trying to explain the latest string of losses for the Santa Fe Fuego. Easily the worst team in the Pecos League prior to their ongoing losing streak, they have taken pitching futility to a new level during their current seven-game skid, which was extended with a 20-5 loss to visiting Tucson on Tuesday night at Fort Marcy Ballpark.

The Fuego (15-44) have surrendered double-digit runs in eight consecutive games and at least 13 in all seven games on the current losing streak. That includes four times in which an opponent has scored at least 20 runs.

The Saguaros (44-13) pounded out 23 hits, scoring in all but one inning. They led 15-1 after four innings and 20-2 entering the bottom of the ninth. Tucson’s Ryan Retz and Jimmy Heck each went 5-for-6 with a pair of home runs each, combining for nine RBI and seven runs scored.

Santa Fe got its only runs on a two-run homer from Daniel Aldrich in the first inning and a three-run shot by Kevin Alvarez in the last half of the ninth.
