The Santa Fe Fuego picked the right time to get hot.
They won their fourth straight Pecos League game on Tuesday, scoring four runs in the eighth inning to take a 5-2 win over the Garden City Wind at Clint Lightner Field. The Mountain Division win brings the Fuego within 1 1/2 games of the third-place Trinidad Triggers, who lost to the second-place Roswell Invaders 12-11 in 10 innings, with 11 game left in the regular season. The top three teams in the Mountain and Pacific Divisions advance to the league playoffs.
With the score tied at 1-all entering the eighth, Santa Fe (28-21) benefited from an error by Wind third baseman Nick Wagner that allowed Willie Doll to score and break the tie. Matt Haskins had an RBI single, then Matt Telesco’s fielder’s choice scored Robert Garza for a 4-2 lead. A.J. Flores capped the Fuego rally with an RBI single and a 5-2 edge.
Zach Carter pitched three innings in relief to earn the win, allowing just one run on three hits. Yale Hughes allowed a run on two hits and seven walks over six innings to keep Santa Fe in the game.
The two teams play the last of their three-game set on Wednesday, and the Invaders head to Fort Marcy Ballpark on Thursday for a crucial four-game series against the Fuego.
