Ed Brandsema pitched six solid innings in yet another quality start for the Santa Fe Fuego, setting the stage for a 17-7 win over White Sands on Friday night at Fort Marcy Ballpark.

Brandsema allowed three hits and three earned runs, walking four and striking out seven. He was making his Pecos League debut after spending the previous two seasons pitching professionally in Japan.

The Fuego (3-0) are off to their best start since starting with a five-game winning streak two years ago. They spotted the Pupfish an early 1-0 in the top of the first, then took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning on a pair of unearned runs on a bad throw that plated Nick Gotta and Caleb Baker on an infield grounder by Erick Magee.

Magee had two hits, driving in six runs while scoring four times. The Fuego had 16 hits on the night with Eric Maria and Matt Haskins each having three. Maria drove in four runs on a night in which Santa Fe didn’t hit a single home run.

The Fuego broke it open in the middle innings, turning a 2-1 lead after two innings into a 13-1 margin after five.

Santa Fe and White Sands will resume their five-game series Saturday night at 6 p.m. The Fuego will send lefthander Matt Elko to the mound for his Pecos League debut. He will be seeking the team’s fourth straight quality start to begin the season.

Host family: The Fuego are seeking one additional host family to take on two players for the duration of the 2017 season. There are 22 players on the roster and all but two have been placed with host families.

If anyone is willing to open their homes they are asked to contact team general manager Yvonne Encinias through www.santafefuego.com.
