The wonders of Oaxaca

On a good day, Oaxaca is about a 30-hour drive from the Plaza — much closer to Mexico’s Guatemala and Belize borders than the United States’. The city and surrounding area are famed for their artisanal culture, and photographer Gary Goldberg has been photographing the textures of the region’s landscapes for years.

That makes him a good match for Santa Fe’s Hecho Gallery, which works primarily with artists from New Mexico and Oaxaca, and the gallery will begin showcasing his works Friday, Jan. 6, as part of From Photography to Textiles: Gary Goldberg. Goldberg has been transforming his photographs into textiles with the help of a team at the Centro de las Artes de San Agustín over the past seven years and brought those works to Hecho. He will discuss them at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at the gallery.

Through Feb. 26, Hecho Gallery, 129 W Palace Ave., 505-455-6882,
