A sobering tale

Before going dark for the holiday season, the New Mexico Actors Lab is offering a Christmas story of sorts.

The Seafarer, written by Irish playwright Conor McPherson, focuses on Sharky, who is trying to stop drinking after he loses his job. He’s staying with his older brother, Richard, who recently lost his sight in an accident. The brothers take part in a poker game on Christmas Eve with visitors — one of whom isn’t what he seems — and the stakes end up being far higher than Sharky could have imagined.

The dark comedy premiered at London’s Royal National Theatre in 2006 and is set in suburban Dublin. Matt Sanford directs the play, which is the final production of the Actors Lab’s 2022 season. It stars Nicholas Ballas, Rod Harrison, Alexander Lane, Jack O’Donnell, and Geoffrey Pomeroy.
