Hips don’t lie: Samhara
In Samhara, the world-famous Nrityagram Dance Ensemble collaborates with Chitrasena Dance Company in a fusion of classical Odissi-style dance from India and Kandyan, traditional high-country dance from Sri Lanka. Odissi is emotional, precise, and narrative-driven, while Kandyan displays the dancers’ technical skills and soulful embodiments of the form. Though Samhara is sometimes described as a fusion of these two styles, the choreography distinctly showcases the differences between them while celebrating women dancers. Santa Fe Ballet presents Nrityagram Dance Ensemble’s Samhara at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 at the Lensic Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $36-$94, ticketssantafe.org.
