12 RA Baroque Week

There’s something universal about a parent’s grief over the loss of a child. And few works of music capture that sorrow more beautifully than in the Stabat Mater by Italian Baroque composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. In the opening depiction of Mary’s tears at the foot of the cross, we hear the exquisite intertwining voices of two women, weeping as one. On Thursday through Sunday, April 18 to 20, Stephen Redfield leads the Pro Musica Baroque Ensemble in Pergolesi’s paean to loss in Baroque Holy Week concerts at the Loretto Chapel (207 Old Santa Fe Trail). Vocal soloists are soprano Clara Rottsolk and Meg Bragle (right), mezzo-soprano. Thursday and Friday concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.; the Saturday show starts at 6 p.m. The program opens with a Flute Concerto by Pergolesi. Tickets ($20-$80) are available at 505-988-1234 and ticketssantafe.org
