The book, Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert: My Life Among the Navajo People (Balboa Press, 202 pages, $14.99), is the first in a series of four memoirs by Erica M. Elliott. In it, she writes about her years after college and her 30s. Elliott tells stories about the time she spent in Chinle, Arizona, as a teacher, and the summer she spent herding sheep in Shiprock, New Mexico. It is heartwarming and sad, brave and full of grit. Elliott will be signing copies of her book at Garcia Street Books (376 Garcia St., 505-986-0151, garciastreetbooks.com) at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 30. Free.
