Opening in conjunction with Center’s annual Review Santa Fe, where photographers present their portfolios for feedback from industry professionals, is The Curve: A Global View of New Photography. The Curve features works from the 2015 recipients of Center’s annual project grants and Choice Awards. The first, second, and third-place Choice Awards are divided into three categories: Editor’s Choice, Director’s Choice, and Curator’s Choice. Recipients for 2015 include Amanda Marchand’s haunting Night Garden photographs, Monika Sziladi’s project Left to Our Own Devices, which explores the impact of social media on photography and human interactions, and Chris Bennett’s moody landscape series Darkwood. “This project is about how I interact visually and emotionally with the landscape of the Pacific Northwest and how it can make me feel empowered and insignificant in just a single glance,” Bennett writes in a statement. “I have a simultaneous respect, wonder and fear for this landscape and it is an attempt to create images that convey the psychological space between my real and imagined fear.” The Curve opens in the Center for Contemporary Arts’ Muñoz Waxman Gallery.
Also opening at CCA is A Room Listening to Itself, a site-specific installation in the Spector-Ripps Project Space by composer and sound artist Adam Basanta. In the work, sounds from microphones are amplified through speakers, creating feedback. The flow of sound is interrupted and altered by the movements of visitors through the space. CCA (1050 Old Pecos Trail) hosts a free opening reception for both shows on Friday, June 12, at 6 p.m. After Friday, entrance is by museum admission. Both exhibitions run through Sept. 13.
