From about the age of five, when Sally Delap-John would “pedal,” she says, pencil sketches from her tricycle in Minkler, California, her passion for art grew. It led, in her college years, to a stint in Europe, studying painting in Florence, Italy, while she pursued her bachelor’s degree and then a master’s at Fresno State University.
An artist and educator, the New Mexico resident for more than 15 years lives and works in Truchas. A plein-air and studio painter, she captures views of the Southwest primarily in oils, which she renders in a loose style with thick applications that give her work a tactile quality. Her watercolors, which were her focus for many years, are evocative and impressionistic with soft lines and opalescent tones.
