Artist Kenny McKenna’s diverse subjects, rendered in loose, impressionistic brushstrokes, are marked by an emphasis on the landscape. On family road trips from his native state of Kansas to California as a youth, McKenna became enamored with the Southwest, and he brings a sense of its varied terrain, its vibrant and subdued opalescent hues, and infusion of light into his work.
A touring musician as well as a painter, McKenna’s musical contributions have been recognized by the Kansas Music Hall of Fame and the South Dakota Rock & Roll Music Hall of Fame. Touring opportunities provided more chances for McKenna to explore the American landscape, from East Coast to West Coast.
But in High Desert Light, which opens with a 5 p.m. reception on Friday, June 17, the focus is on the regional landscape of the Southwest, and McKenna’s varied palette captures its many moods. The show is on view through July 1.
