From The Santa Fe New Mexican:

May 25, 1923: Gallup, N.M., May 25 — Gallup, busy modern coal mining town, closed its businesses, houses and schools today while its people and a thousand visitors, including archaeologists, artists and writers from all parts of the country witnessed a picturesque excursion back a thousand years or more into the tribal legend and tradition of the Navajo Indians.

Venerable chiefs and medicine men from the nearby Navajo reservation officiated at the dedication of a modern hotel, El Navajo, built by the Santa Fe railway for the Fred Harvey system.
