The Buffalo Thunder Casino & Resort at Pojoaque Pueblo began a sports betting operation this week.

Casino patrons who want to bet on a game can do so at kiosks in Buffalo Thunder’s race betting spot, Thunder Race Book, a casino employee confirmed Wednesday.

It is the state’s second sports book at an Indian casino. The other is at Santa Ana Pueblo’s Santa Ana Star Casino, which opened its sports betting operation in October.

The state’s gaming compacts with Native American tribes don’t specifically address sports wagering. In May, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1992, which had prevented most states from allowing sports betting.

Efforts to reach Pojoaque Pueblo officials were unsuccessful Wednesday.

Gaming Today, a gambling industry publication, reported Buffalo Thunder is partnering with Las Vegas Dissemination Co. and South Point Hotel and Casino and National Sports Book Management for the sports betting. The article, published Monday, said the Pojoaque casino is the only one in New Mexico offering parimutuel racing bets as well as sports wagering.

“In addition, it is the only book outside of Nevada that has kiosks to handle both race and sports hardware and software support,” Gaming Today said.

A Buffalo Thunder employee said Wednesday that betting on college sports is part of its sports book.
