Totally agree that the scenery between SFe and Lamy is spectacular--have you never paid attention, reporter, to the descent into the Galisteo Basin? And let's see, people making $30-40K per year will no doubt (sarcasm) find this train affordable. People are so easily bored with their 5 minute attention spans we have to provide fake entertainment--I wonder how well the mystery solving part will go. We tried to reeact mysteries while doing SW Mystery Writers through Elderhostel (now Road Scholars)--it was always a hysterical disaster.

"Hardly scenic"??? Well that's not only rude, it's wrong. I live along this line and it is flat out gorgeous out here. The Ortiz, Sandia, Jemez, and Sangre de Cristo are all in view and in some spots you can see the Basin and Cerro Pelon. It's beautiful. I hope the condescension of that remark doesn't mean we're going to be subjected to the rudeness like the previous owner displayed. I'm honestly not too comfortable the idea of my neighborhood being turned into an entertainment theme park.

[smile] What a great idea and concept! Will be exciting to see it actually rolling down the tracks. I’m hoping it will attract a lot of the locals and tourists which can eventually elevate this as a main staple for entertainment in Santa Fe.

My only reservation is that the population is not big enough to sustain and it may go by the wayside.

I’m not trying to predict the future or add sour grapes because I really love the idea. But I just don’t see the population stimulated by this. Are the Santa Feans and fellow New Mexican neighbors ready to embrace and willing to support???? I hope so.

Are the locomotive engines steam or diesel?

Khal Spencer

If it is the one I saw today, looked diesel.

Wow, this is cool, but I think we need to put out an alert to trail users that they better start watching for a train again. I think a lot of us just figured those tracks would never be used again.

Do we need a PSA to the bike-hike community or an alert sign at the trailheads?

As far as sixty bucks? Heck, I ride the rail trail to the end on my trail bicycle for free!

It is not clear from the article if the new excursion train will make any effort (or has any ability) to transport Santa Fe residents to and from the Lamy station. Amtrak still serves the Lamy station, but riders have few options when it comes to getting to and from the station. Last time I checked, there was just one van service, and the prices for that van ride seemed high to me. I did not notice a price mentioned for the excursion train. Entertainment is all well and good, but something practical like transportation should also be a consideration.

Dan, I just went to the website. For the Christmas train, it’s $60 per adult and $40 for each child ages 3-12.
