Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham discusses virus cases during a news conference in September.

It’s no secret Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s name has been floated as a possible pick for health secretary under the administration of President-elect Joe Biden.

The speculation is continuing to mount: A new report says New Mexico’s governor has become one of the two “top contenders” for the job.

Lujan Grisham and former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy “are widely viewed as leading candidates,” according to Politico, which attributed the information to “more than a half-dozen people on or close to” Biden’s transition plans.

“The nomination of Lujan Grisham, 61, would continue a tradition of presidents tapping governors to lead the sprawling Department of Health and Human Services, and make her the first Latina ever nominated for the post,” Politico reported Tuesday night. “Murthy, a 43-year-old Yale-educated internist who’s grown close to Biden as a top adviser on the coronavirus pandemic, would be the first nominee of Indian descent for the department’s top job.”

A spokeswoman for the governor had little to say Wednesday about the report.

“The governor is focused on the COVID-19 crisis at hand in New Mexico,” Nora Meyers Sackett wrote in an email.

A spokesperson for the Biden transition team did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Reaction to the latest report about Lujan Grisham was largely negative, at least on Twitter.

“This is the Governor that just today had citizens waiting outside in 42 [degree] temps for over 2 hours to get into a Walmart,” tweeted @DevonCormier.

“This governor should be incarcerated,” tweeted @rd_barrett.

The Politico report also states that the Congressional Hispanic Caucus is making a “strong push” for Lujan Grisham, a former congresswoman who served as chairwoman of the organization.

“Influential Latino advocacy groups have also weighed in on her behalf, pointing in particular to her state leadership during the pandemic,” according to the report, which called Lujan Grisham “one of the most aggressive governors in combating” COVID-19.

But the governor has baggage, Politico reported.

“As a House lawmaker, Lujan Grisham profited when her former consulting group received a contract to run New Mexico’s high-risk insurance pool — even after Obamacare largely eliminated the coverage model. The arrangement has since prompted conflict of interest accusations,” the report states.

Lujan Grisham, who also served as secretary of New Mexico’s Department of Aging and Long-Term Services and Department of Health, is one of five co-chairpersons on Biden’s transition team.

The governor, who expressed interest in the Cabinet position, according to a July report in the New York Times, was on the shortlist for Biden’s vice presidential candidate before U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris of California accepted the nomination.

She is a politician. Like all politicians her decisions are politically expedient.

Very mixed emotions here. On the one hand I would love to see NM rid itself of her incompetent leadership, if you can call it that. But on the other hand I just don't feel good (particularly on Thanksgiving) about wishing her buffoonery on the other 49 states. The classic conundrum but perhaps an answer. I doubt the country, unlike NM, would long put up with being second to last at everything so her tenure in DC should be short lived.

Mike Johnson

Yes, of course we knew this, and it explains her extra nasty, draconian, and totalitarian responses of late. The NM scold, soon she will be wagging her finger and scolding the nation.

A hard call... where can our incompetent Governor do the least damage? Probably in New Mexico, which has little influence on the nation. But, it would be such a delight to have this incompetent, micro manager, gone... Even Howie looks good. On consideration, I'd send her to Washington, and let THEM sort her out.

But, the other candidate has medical credentials, so would likely be a better choice... Perhaps she could just resign, and save us this soul searching???

Mike Johnson

[thumbup] Agreed. The nation will suffer without a real educated and experienced medical professional/scientist, but she won't be our problem anymore.

David Romero

The sooner the better. Maybe then she will close down the whole country?

Again: I'm neither a Republican , nor Democrat. Not, a "Liberal" nor a "Conservative". If you must label me? A Christian and an American - only in that precise order. Thus, I'll first establish Truth and work from there:

From the Democrat-party slanted Dominion voting-system corporation to numerous "election" officials, most are spewing the same, tired narrative used for decades, proclaiming, "No evidence of widespread voting fraud" . Be sure, the key-words "no evidence" and "widespread" are open to debate, however cunningly applied. Instead of going into a long, drawn-out dissertation, I'll merely ask: If a glass of pure, pristine drinking-water is sprinkled with only one drop of urine, is it still drinking water?

Of course, "Governor" Grisham is being considered for a well-earned political pay-out, after all, she's blindly and faithfully served the DNC and their platform - above all. Now, -not unlike other Hispano/Latino-Americans- her twisted party will reward her with a relatively insignificant appointment - while calling it "historic".

Ultimately, while New Mexicans continue to be ravaged by a pandemic and profound Economic woes, Grisham will move to Washington, D.C. to do what she's always done best: Serve her political-party, and search for gaudy, funky jewelry. Vaya con queso.

Wise words indeed hermano. As are these:"Objective truths are established by evidence; personal truths by faith; political truths by repetitition." - Neil deGrasse Tyson

Thank-you, Mike. May you and yours have a Happy and Most Blessed Thanksgiving, brother.

Amending my comment: This is the same governor whose Web page to report a business for Covid violations does not request any CONTACT information from the person filing the report, which means the governor's office cannot follow up on any reports that may lack clarity or essential information. https://www.newmexico.gov/2020/03/25/how-to-report-non-compliance-within-a-business-a-violation-of-the-mass-gatherings-ban-or-other-violations-of-the-public-order/

What alternative universe do you exist in? Trump LOST....Get over it.

Myself I think MLG needs to stay in state and help us through the pandemic.
