At least one person was killed in a fiery single-engine airplane crash Monday night in the La Cienega area south of Santa Fe Regional Airport, authorities said.

Lt. Matthew Champlin of the Santa Fe Police Department said the private plane, apparently with only the pilot on board, went down about a mile short of a runway while approaching the airport southwest of the city.

He said a fire department crew was notified of the crash about 7:50 p.m. and responded to the scene. Area residents reported seeing flames and smoke. Authorities were investigating.

Champlin said city police helped find and secure a crash site that was approximately 75 to 100 yards long.

Champlin expected the Federal Aviation Administration to send investigators and that the National Transportation Safety Board would become involved in determining a cause for the crash.

No other details were immediately available late Monday.
