The New Mexico National Guard has scheduled a ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the fall of Bataan at 11 a.m. Saturday outside the Bataan Memorial Building on Don Gaspar Avenue.

The event, which is open to the public, will be followed by a reception.

The Battle of Bataan — the first major military campaign of the Asian theater in World War II following the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor — took a huge toll on New Mexico residents. Of the 1,800-plus New Mexico soldiers who fought in the battle, only half returned home alive. Many of them, survivors of the Bataan Death March and Japanese prisoner-of-war camps, came back physically, mentally and emotionally scarred.

Because of the pandemic, the annual Santa Fe commemoration was not held live in 2020 or 2021.
