The New Mexico Film Office announced Monday that Walt Disney Pictures will film Stargirl in Albuquerque and Truth or Consequences starting this month.

The film is being produced exclusively for Disney’s soon-to-launch streaming service, according to a news release from the New Mexico Film Office.

Stargirl will be among Disney’s exclusive film list, available only to subscribers — similar to Netflix Originals.

The film is based on Jerry Spinelli’s 2000 award-winning book, which tells the story of a high school girl trying to navigate nonconformity and falling in love. It will star 2016 America’s Got Talent winner Grace VanderWaal and Canadian teen actor Graham Verchere, from The Good Doctor and Summer of ‘84.

This weekend, VanderWaal posted a photo on Instagram standing on West San Francisco Street in Santa Fe; Verchere posted images looking out at the Sandia Mountains.

On Monday, VanderWaal — who opened for Imagine Dragons at the Isleta Ampitheater in July — launched another post saying that she was heading back to Albuquerque.

Principal photography will begin in September and last through mid-November, said the film office’s director, Nick Maniatis.

The production of Stargirl will employ 180 New Mexico crew members, as well as 20 actors and 3,500 extras statewide, according to the news release.

“There will be a lot more production coming to Santa Fe and to the state this year,” Maniatis said. “Our pipeline is full.”
