How politically incorrect, and violating all woke agendas to chose "Miners" as a mascot's name. Miners rape the land, destroy the earth, and are generally evil people, like oil drillers, engineers, geologists, etc. I am surprise at Howie not recognizing this, I thought he was Mr. Woke, and using a socialist propaganda movie like "Salt of the Earth" as background you would think he would know better.....http://todayinclh.com/?event=salt-of-the-earth-film-released-widely-banned-for-left-wing-perspective

Dang, Mike. You beat me to the tirade. All I can add is that this name is antithetical to the movement to Save the Earth, since miners contribute to global warming by mining coal. Harumph.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane, from two perspectives.

I had the privilege of working as a Senate intern in Ben Nighthorse Campbell's Denver office in 1994. Summer gig, no pay, got college credit. I got to see how honorable people ran a Senate office that was geared towards serving the people.

The other less pleasant road is from high school back in the late 1960s/early 1970s. South High School Colonels. The mascot was a old white southern man decked out in a Confederate uniform. The school song was Dixie and the Confederate flag was flown liberally at all school events. Why anyone thought that adopting that theme in 1959 was a good idea is beyond me, except that the folks in that part of town were more racist than the rest of the town.

So when forced busing came in 1970, tensions were high. We all eventually got to experience the tear gas and classroom lock downs. By spring of 1971 the handwriting was on the wall and the school was forced to change their theme.

Fast forward to about 2 months ago. I was doing some Facebook surfing and found an alumni group specifically for people who graduated from there while the theme was still the Colonels. The word Colonel is in the name of the group. They address each other with Colonel, such as "Welcome to Colonel John Doe, nominated by Colonel Jane Doe." Does that seem very welcoming to any black graduates, which there were some during that time frame.

I guess I'm telling the story to back up that racial mascots need to be eliminated immediately. Some people really identify with them and their fallacies and will continue their legacy until they die.
