Hoping to attract a larger pool of candidates, the Legislative Finance Committee has extended the deadline to apply for its soon-to-be vacant director position — which the committee chairman called the most difficult job in state government.

So far, the committee has received only six applications to replace David Abbey, who is retiring at the end of the month after leading the legislative agency for more than a quarter-century.

Among them is Rachel Gudgel, who stepped down as director of the Legislative Education Study Committee in 2021 amid allegations of creating a hostile work environment, including making derogatory remarks about Native Americans.
