Twenty-two chefs and restaurants competed in the annual Souper Bowl fundraiser hosted by the Food Depot on Saturday at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center.

But only one had the best soup.

This year’s top prize went to Chef Nou Kimnath’s, or “Chef Nath” of Nath’s Inspired Khmer Cuisine, for a Chicken Red Curry.

The award marks at least the fourth year in a row that Chef Nath, who was born in Cambodia, has won the best overall soup category.

Winners in other categories included:

Best Savory Soup: Chicken Red Curry, Nath’s Inspired Khmer Cuisine

Best Cream: Caribbean Martini soup, El Castillo Life Plan Community

Best Seafood: Thai Coconut Seafood Soup, Kingston Residence of Santa Fe

Best Vegetarian: Corn chowder, Social Kitchen + Bar

The winners were decided by a vote of the estimated 1,200 attendees at Saturday’s event, many of whom are repeat participants in the annual fundraiser.

Zander Evans of Santa Fe said he’s come to nearly every Souper Bowl in the last decade.

“I love the cause, I think we need to support the hungry in our community,” Evans said. “And, of course, I love the soup.”

And Eileen Mandel said she’s almost never missed a Souper Bowl in the event’s 25-year history.

“I think it’s such a wonderful community thing,” Mandel said. “I just love these restaurants for doing this year after year for us.”
