Bill Baxter was such a treasure around here. He will be missed. So happy to read he had a great life and a lovely wife.

I hope others will be inspired by Bill Baxter to get up and out to help volunteer and preserve this precious area.

I first moved near Cerrillos in 1965 and heard many folktales as I grew up. The Cerrilos-San Marcos-Madrid District is loaded with history. We had our local Historian Marc Simmons and he wrote a few short stories about Cerrillos until his retirement a couple of years ago. Homer Milford (of N.M. Mining & Minerals Division---now retired) and Jane Calvin Sanchez (now deceased) worked a lot with him on the Cerrillos Hills State Park. I first met Bill on line a few years ago. Then last year like Kay Bird I went on a hike with him. He also gave tours of the San Marcos Pueblo.

I got to hear Bill's stories during a hike last year. I feel honored that I got to meet him and learn a bit of all that he knew.

Bill Baxter was one hell of a guy. He probably forgot more about New Mexico’s cultural heritage than most people ever learn in a lifetime. Warm, funny, tireless in his efforts to educate people about the land he loved, Bill was an absolutely unique individual whom it was my privilege to know. He will be missed a great deal.

Bill published another book in 2014 "Gold and the Ortiz Mine Grant : a New Mexico history and reference guide," and donated a number of copies to the Laboratory of Anthropology to be sold to benefit their library. Copies are available from abebooks.com (search for "Ortiz Mine Grant").
