The U.S. Department of Energy reports New Mexico built the third-most land-based wind power capacity in 2021, behind Texas and Oklahoma.

According to the department’s annual Wind Market Reports, New Mexico added 1,368 megawatts of wind power to reach 4,001 total megawatts of wind power produced in the state.

Wind power accounted for 29.8 percent of New Mexico’s overall electricity generation in 2021. The leaders in wind power as the largest share of power generation are Iowa (55 percent), South Dakota (52 percent), Kansas (45 percent), Oklahoma (41 percent) and North Dakota (34 percent), the report states.
