In anticipation of Pope Francis’ address to the U.S. Congress on Thursday, a coalition of religious and environmental groups plans a “climate vigil” on the steps of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.

An organizer said the Santa Fe event, scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, is intended to show support for the pontiff’s remarks on climate change.

Scheduled speakers include the Very Rev. Adam Ortega y Ortiz, rector of the cathedral; Rabbi Neil Amswych of Temple Beth Shalom; the Rev. Talitha Arnold of the United Church of Santa Fe; and Sister Joan Brown of Albuquerque, executive director of New Mexico Interfaith Power and Light, a group that addresses climate change and works for sustainability.

In addition to the cathedral, sponsors of the event include the Interfaith Leadership Alliance, Santa Fe Pax Christi and New Mexico Campaign Nonviolence.
