TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES — New Mexico State Police said Wednesday it is investigating the death of a volunteer firefighter who was fatally struck by a firetruck.

Officers said 59-year-old Janet Tracy of Caballo was at a crash scene south of Truth or Consequences on Tuesday providing aid and support to a victim.

A firetruck driven by a 52-year-old-man was being repositioned, and the driver said he didn’t see Tracy and backed over her, according to state police.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by the state Office of the Medical Investigator.

State police said the firetruck was not equipped with a backup camera and the agency is not releasing the name of the driver, who's also a Caballo volunteer firefighter.

The saddest story I've read today, perhaps all week, all month, all year.
