ALAMOGORDO — Holloman Air Force Base officials say Afghan refugees have started arriving at the base in Southern New Mexico.

A C-130J transport flew the first Afghans to Holloman from Philadelphia on Tuesday, base officials said Wednesday in a statement that did not specify how many refugees had arrived at the base.

The Defense Department previously said multiple military installations across the country that would temporarily provide housing, along with medical and other support for a total of up to 50,000 Afghans.

Officials said the refugees were coming to the U.S. under the Special Immigrant Visa program and would undergo medical screening, including testing for the coronavirus, before arriving at the military bases.

The U.S. and its allies conducted a massive evacuation after the Taliban seized control of most of Afghanistan as the U.S. withdrew support to the Afghan military.

Brig. Gen. Daniel Gabrielli, Task Force-Holloman commander, said base personnel “were able to receive our guests with open arms and ensure that they are treated with the utmost dignity and respect.”

The Alamogordo Daily News reported that Holloman officials were accepting donations of clothing, personal hygiene items and new tote and gym bags.

Sorry until we can take care of our own homelessness, vets on the street, secure our Southern border etc we should help resettle these people in the Mid East.

I agree Jim. My experience and contacts with previous refugees, fleeing from war torn and socialist dominated countries, has been very positive. The Vietnamese I knew and helped in Houston just after the 1975 evacuation, and subsequent "boat people" waves taught me much about my own service and what lasting societal contributions we made to Vietnam before we left in such chaos. That group of people have contributed so much to America since arriving. Likewise the Cubans fleeing the same kind of oppression, communism/socialism/totalitarians, have become solid citizens making Florida and other states very successful. The Somalis, fleeing feudal, primitive Islam, who I was personally involved in helping through my company's operations there, have also become great citizens (Rep. Omar is an exception to the rule, but nothing is 100%) who appreciate America's freedoms and liberty, as well as our sense of justice and equality, which they had never known to the extent we enjoy it. I think they will make fine Americans, as they know what it is like to live in a society that is far from our society's standards, opportunity, and wealth.
