Janice Ruggiero has been named interim athletic director at The University of New Mexico, the school announced Monday. She replaces Paul Krebs, who is on accrued annual leave until the end of the month after announcing his retirement on June 1.
A graduate of Albuquerque’s Eldorado High School, Ruggiero played on UNM’s women’s basketball team for three seasons before launching a career in the athletics department as a coach, advisor, compliance officer and, later, as an administrator.
She earned a master’s degree in sports administration in 1997 and has been the deputy director for internal operations and the senior women’s administrator under Krebs for the past several years.
Krebs stepped down last week after 11 years as UNM’s athletic director. Acting school president Chaouki Abdallah said a search for Krebs’ replacement will begin within the month and that UNM “will seek to build upon the strong foundation Paul Krebs helped establish and select a new leader to set the course for our Lobo athletics programs.”
