We interrupt the basketball love fest to tell you that swimming and wrestling are in the final throes of their 2011-12 season.
This week: District meets.
Next week: State meets.
The week after that: Resume basketball fix.
But let's give the underpublicized sports their fair share of attention for the moment. There's plenty of time to give basketball its due.
Swimming
Last week: The regular season ended in Genoveva Chavez Community Center with the Capital City Invitational. Desert Academy's Hannah Lochner qualified for her fifth individual event in her 500-yard freestyle win (5 minutes, 46.68 seconds). Teammate Stuart Sproul won the 1-meter dive. Seth Montgomery of Santa Fe Preparatory helped the Blue Griffins to three firsts (50 freestyle, 200 medley relay, 200 free relay). Will Fong paced Academy for Technology and the Classics with wins in the 200 and 500 free.
This week: It will be the last chance for swimmers to qualify for state in the District 1 meet at Los Alamos.
Wrestling
Last week: Many in the North ventured to the Bryan Sanchez Invitational in Los Alamos. All they got was a
T-shirt and a chance to watch the host Hilltoppers win the team title. Fellow District 2AAAA foes Bernalillo
(fifth place) and Capital (seventh) were among the witnesses.
This week: The District 2AAAA meet will be at Santa Fe High. St. Michael's travels to Fort Wingate
for the District 1/5A-AAA meet, and Las Vegas Robertson will hold court in the 2A-AAA meet.
Boys basketball
Last week: It was not a good week to be a Horseman. Not only did they lose in overtime to the state's best team -- regardless of class -- in Albuquerque Hope Christian, they also lost to the No. 3 team in AAA (Sandia Prep) on Saturday to fall into a tie for second place in District 5AAA.
Capital ran out of steam after beating Santa Fe High in a pivotal 2AAAA matchup on Wednesday, as Albuquerque St. Pius X handled the Jaguars on Friday. Las Vegas Robertson took control of 2AAA by beating Taos and West Las Vegas. Santa Fe Prep pulled off the first surprise in 2AA by going to Pecos and beating the Panthers.
This week: Survival mode kicks in this week. The Demons don't want to fall from second to last in a week by losing to Los Alamos. Then again, neither do the Hilltoppers. St. Michael's tries to stop its skid against Pojoaque Valley on Tuesday. Mora has the dreaded Pecos/Prep roadie on Tuesday and Thursday.
Santa Fe Waldorf has a tough back-to-back set with Walatowa and Wagon Mound, the No. 2 team in Class B.
Girls basketball
Last week: Meanwhile, the Lady Horsemen made waves by beating Hope Christian to create a three-way tie with Santa Fe Indian School for first in 5AAA. Española Valley overcame controversy regarding a possible hazing incident and beat Santa Fe High to force a tie atop 2AAAA.
And let's not forget Peñasco, which showed that Mora is not indestructible with a 53-48 win over the Rangerettes on Friday for first place in 2AA.
This week: District 2AA owns Monday as Prep heads to Peñasco and Mora goes to slumping Pecos. The Lady Braves have another big week of games with Kirtland Central coming on Tuesday and St. Michael's hoping to play rude host on Saturday. New Mexico School for the Deaf has both the boys and girls heading to Minnesota for the Great Plains School for the Deaf Tournament.
