A nine-run third inning by visiting Garden City was more than enough to drive the Wind past Santa Fe, 11-5, in Pecos League action Wednesday night at Fort Marcy Ballpark.

Fuego pitchers gave up 12 hits and, seven of them in the third inning as Garden City sent a dozen men to the plate to break open what had been a scoreless game. The Wind’s Ryan Whitt, Michael Biasello and Dave Gallagher each homered in the inning against Santa Fe starting pitcher Ismael Pena.

Pena had eight strikeouts in his six innings on the mound but gave up 11 hits and 10 runs with four walks. Only five of his runs were earned, a byproduct of Santa Fe’s shoddy defense that committed three errors behind him.

The Fuego offense was passed by No. 8 hitter Ryan Arena. He finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and two scored. He hit a pair of solo home runs as Santa Fe never seriously threatened Garden City’s comfortable lead after that third inning.

The Fuego (23-25) have lost two straight and are now

12 games behind first-place Trinidad in the Mountain Division. There are just 14 games remaining in the regular season.
