Most one-man plays star a single character. Guru of Chai stars 17 (well, 18, counting the live musician who performs onstage but does not speak), all voiced by Jacob Rajan. The New Zealand playwright and actor said that after two years of in-depth rehearsal, the real challenge isn’t keeping track of all these personalities — it’s trying to keep them from bursting forth of their own volition.
Since co-founding the independent Indian Ink Theatre Company in 1997, Rajan and his collaborators have written and toured six comedy-drama productions that incorporate multicultural themes with the use of masks. In recognition of his work, the New Zealand-raised actor, of Indian descent, was recently named a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
