The year was 1929. With Hitler rising in Germany, war already in the winds, and economic meltdown lurking over the horizon of a materialism-crazed society, it seemed like a good time to quit Western civilization and head for the “world’s end,” as explorer and biologist William Beebe called the Galápagos Islands.
