Virgil Oldman (Geoffrey Rush) is a connoisseur, a crook, an obsessive-compulsive, an arrogant snob, a loner, and, in the words of Henry Higgins, a confirmed old bachelor and likely to remain so. A man in his 60s with no history of romantic entanglements might be suspected as a closeted homosexual or a straitjacketed asexual. But such is not the case with Virgil. He does have a closet, or rather, a safe room behind a closet in his luxurious bachelor apartment. But he keeps it stocked with women.
