Monsters don’t always look like monsters. If you believed Khmer Rouge propaganda films from the 1970s, Pol Pot, the group’s infamous leader, wasn’t a villain. The reels always depict him as smiling, cheerful, applauding, and waving. We all know the truth, though: in 1975, the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia and set about fulfilling their dream of creating a “pure” classless Communist society of peasant revolutionaries.
