From The Santa Fe New Mexican:
May 15, 1914: Carlsbad — At 1,200 feet, the Carlsbad Oil and Gas Company struck more salt, after drilling in limestone for about 75 feet. The formation changed again at about 1,235 feet the examination indicated a formation charged with potash. This is largely imported into this country for fertilizer. Should a big deposit of kainite, kleserite or carnalite be found, it means a fortune.
