From The Santa Fe New Mexican:
May 23, 1914: Albuquerque — Passenger train No. 810, northbound on the Santa Fe’s main line to El Paso, was wrecked at La Joya, 60 miles south of Albuquerque, early this morning when a broken rail sent the engine and seven cars into the ditch. The train was running slowly because of soft track, and passengers escaped with a severe shaking up. Traffic was delayed eight hours. The Santa Fe is having serious trouble with floods from the Rio Grande along the El Paso division.
