In the movie Moonstruck, Nicholas Cage takes Cher to a performance of La Boheme telling her: “I love two things. I love you, and I love the opera. If I can have the two things that I love together for one night, I will be satisfied to give up the rest of my life.” In Pretty Woman, Richard Gere takes Julia Roberts to a performance of La Traviata and remarks: “People’s reaction to opera the first time they hear it is extreme … They either love it or they hate it. If they love it, they will always love it. If they don’t, they may learn to love it, but it will never become part of their soul.”

These quotes describe opera beautifully. After love, it is the most important thing! I have few memories of childhood that do not include opera. Specifically, the Metropolitan Opera, where my father was chief music librarian for 30 years.

Thank you, Alice. What an experience you have had. The gift of the human voice is truly a blessing. While it is not opera, which I have done, some of my greatest experiences have been as a member of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale.
