New Mexico is ambivalent toward same-sex marriage — there are no laws that state marriage is between just a man and a woman, or that marriage equality can be practiced among same-sex couples. There is nothing written about it. Two resolutions were introduced to change that in the recently concluded session of the state Legislature.

House Joint Resolution 3 was a bill advocating for legal same-sex marriage in New Mexico. It was struck down in committee 7-4; included in the naysayers was Democratic member Sen. Mary Helen Garcia of Las Cruces. I am disgusted. It would have allowed voters in the next election to decide on adding same-sex marriage rights to the New Mexico Constitution.

Mr. Obama does not represent New Mexico. If you do not like the way Chap. 40 article is written, then, go back to the state legislature and try changing the existing law in the book. I like that marriage in NM has always been between a man and woman, period!

Chapter 40 article 2 clearly states that marriage is between a husband and a wife, those terms aren't defined.
