As a former quarterback in high school, I’ve been captivated with all the talk this week about Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and his signal-calling before the snap at the line of scrimmage, and in particular him being captured by TV field microphones using the term “Omaha” over 40 times during his cadence in last week’s playoff win over the San Diego Chargers.

I kept waiting and waiting all week for sports radio and television talk show hosts and analysts, at least one, to refer to the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska when describing what Manning is saying when he yells “Omaha, set, hut.” Guess what? I’m still waiting for the first reference to the origin of the word.
