New Mexico’s skies — whether the brilliant blue of day or the deep velvet dark of night — are one of the state’s foremost attractions.
Almost 15 years ago, the New Mexico Legislature recognized the importance of preserving darkness, passing the Night Sky Protection Act. The legislation had two purposes: to protect the dark and to save energy. Both the city of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County also regulate light pollution, ensuring that we still can see the stars above even as population expands.
