¡Ask a Mexican!

Dear Mexican: I have some questions and observations. During George W. Bush’s administration, there was a lot of talk for and against comprehensive immigration reform (amnesty to some). One remark that I recall was stated by a Mexican that went something like, “Go back to Europe!!!!” Aren’t Mexicans of European descent also? Hello, colonized by Spain. I thought to myself, “Why don’t you go back to Europe? Unless you are puro indio, your roots are from Europe also.” Immigration reform aside, what are your thoughts on going back to Europe?

Heyyy...isn't that cartoon caricature offensive? Shouldn't there be rioting in the streets because of it?

New Mexicans have always had to work to make sure people knew that New Mexico was a culturally unique place, not just some small offshoot of Mexico. But now Santa Fe's local newspaper is importing a column about what it's like to be a Mexican in SoCal, as if that's somehow relevant to the New Mexican experience. I still don't get it.

My best guess it that the New Mexican is running this column to acclimatise Hispanic New Mexicans to the Anglo PC belief that New Mexican Nortenos should feel some sort of solidarity with illegal immigrants because some of those illegals are also Hispanic. Seems divisive to me.
