March 18, 1910: John W. Rhea, a Roswell banker, broke his leg while out automobiling 14 miles from Roswell. While cranking the machine in which his wife and friends were seated the machine ran away and passed over him. Mrs. Rhea with great presence of mind steered it into the side of a hill.
March 18, 1960: Police Chief A.B. Martinez today said he intends to seek permission from the city fathers to set up a program within the police department that would be 'a big step in solving Santa Fe's number one problem — 'juvenile delinquency.' Martinez would like to assign a commanding officer and a policewoman to a training school on mental health and psychological principles. After receiving this specialized training, the two would act as consultants, equipped to handle special problems, especially those concerning juvenile delinquents.
March 18, 1985: Washington — Sometime in the first part of 1985, economists believe the United States, the richest country on earth, became a net debtor for the first time since before World War I. Simply put, that means we owe foreigners more than they owe us. Most ominous is that economists say the country will pile on debt at an almost astronomical rate. By the end of this year, the United States will be the world's leading debtor nation, they say.
