February 4, 1960: Friends of Big Ed Mechem have been wearing broad grins ever since talking to the former governor here Monday. Cause of the sudden cheer is word that the three-time winner (and one time loser) is going to try for a fourth term and will make his announcement within the next few days. The cheer didn't spread over into the camp of Joe Bursey. Bursey supporters gloomily calculate that the presence of Mechem on the Republican ballot will hurt Joe's chances of beating Gov. John Burroughs in the primary. They calculate that a lot of the pro-Mechem type Democrats who they had counted on will now vote for Burroughs on the theory that Mechem would find Burroughs easier to beat in the general election. Sort of a complicated calculation but it's a good illustration of political logic.
