A fire on an underground truck hauling salt at the Waste Isolation Pilot Project forced evacuation of all employees to the surface, according to Department of Energy officials. No injuries have been reported yet, according to Kim Greer, public information manager with the DOE Joint Information Center.
Emergency responders in Carlsbad were called to the scene at about 11 a.m. Wednesday. WIPP, which stores radioactive waste in underground salt caverns, is about 26 miles east of Carlsbad.
