Public schools across the state will see a bump of about $144 per student “unit” to a value of $3,817 this coming year — the highest in at least five years. The unit value helps determine how much money each district gets from the state to operate its schools.

Each unit does not correspond to a single student, however. Students are assigned different numbers of “units” depending on their grade level — high school students get more than elementary students — and their special needs. A typical high school student is worth 1.2 units, for example, although an English-language learner or a student who is developmentally disabled would garner a higher unit value to help cover the costs of those services.
